South St. Vegan Philly Chz Steak

This is our veganized take on the Philadelphia classic! For this recipe we used TVP, textured vegetable protein, which is very versatile and takes on whatever wonderful flavors you cook it with. We added onions, mushrooms, peppers, and our ooey gooey chz sauce that we used in our Mac ‘n Broc ‘n Chz. Honestly, this is one of the best sandwiches we’ve ever tasted, and we hope you agree too!

Ingredients:

“Steak”: 1 cup TVP (textured vegetable protein)

1 cup vegetable broth

1/2 tsp. onion powder

1/2 tsp. garlic powder

1 tsp. vegan worcestershire sauce

Sriracha sauce, a splash

salt & pepper to taste

 

“Chz”: 1/8 cup olive oil

1/8 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup mozzarella Daiya shreds

1/2 cup cheddar Daiya shreds

1 cup non-dairy milk, we used almond milk

1 tsp. garlic powder

1 tsp. onion powder

1/2 tsp. dried basil

salt & pepper to taste

 

2 large mushrooms, sliced

1/4 of a sweet onion, diced large

1/4 of a red pepper, sliced

olive oil for sauteing veggies

Method of Prep:

To make the “Steak”: Place the TVP in a pan. In a small pot, bring the vegetable broth to a boil and dump into the TVP. Allow it to soak for 10 minutes. It will hydrate and expand a little bit. After the 10 minutes, blot the TVP with a paper towel to remove any excess water. Set aside.

In a large saute pan, heat 2 Tbsp. of olive oil on Med. Add in the sliced mushrooms, onion and red pepper. Saute until veggies are cooked. The onions will be translucent, the red pepper soft, and the mushrooms soft.

In the same saute pan, add in the TVP. Stir around, and add in the vegan worcestershire sauce, Sriracha, onion powder, and garlic powder. Stirring frequently, heat completely through, about 4-6 minutes.

This mixture is ready to go in a hoagie roll and top with our Chz sauce.

To make the “Chz”: In a medium sized pot, heat the 1/8 cup of olive oil on Med to Med/Hi heat. Once hot, stir in the flour, then the garlic powder, onion powder, dried basil, salt and pepper. Once all mixed, add in the non-dairy milk. Allow this to heat until just boiling. Stirring frequently to prevent sticking.

Next, stir in the Daiya cheeses. Continue to stir until fully melted. Once completely blended and heated, the sauce is complete.

    How many hoagies does this recipe make?
