Here is an American classic sandwich known as the Sloppy Joe which got it’s name from a cook named Joe at a cafe in Sioux City, Iowa back in 1930. Traditionally this is made with ground beef but there’s no beef in our new vegan take on the classic, we used our favorite go to versatile ingredient, TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein). Our Vegan Sloppy Joe is easy to make and a tasty comfort food that you and your family will just gobble up. Tastes great with sliced pickles and chopped onions on top.
2 cups Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP)
2 cups vegetable broth
1 14.5oz. can of fire roasted tomatoes
1 6oz. can of tomato paste
1/2 cup mushrooms
1 small red onion
1 small green bell pepper
2 cloves raw garlic
3 Tbps. light brown sugar
1 Tbsp. Worchestershire Sauce, vegan
1 tsp. tamari
1/2 tsp. liquid smoke
2 tsp. chili powder
1 tsp. mustard powder
1 tsp. dried oregano
1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
1 Tbsp. olive oil
Salt & Pepper to taste
Hamburger Rolls, vegan
Method of Prep:
Lay the dry TVP in a shallow bowl or pan.
Heat the vegetable broth in a pot over Med/Hi heat. Bring it just to a boil, stirring occasionally.
Dump the hot vegetable broth over the TVP, stirring once. Allow it to soak up all the broth.
While the TVP is soaking, blend together the garlic, red onion, mushrooms and green pepper in a food processor until they are finely chopped.
Heat 1 Tbsp. olive oil in a non-stick skillet over Med/High heat. Add in the chopped garlic, red onion, mushroom and green pepper mixture. Cook until they are softened and translucent.
Add the TVP to the skillet. Mix together.
Add in the fire roasted tomatoes, tomato puree, light brown sugar, Worchestershire sauce, tamari, liquid smoke and all the spices which include, chili powder, mustard powder, dried oregano and cayenne pepper. Salt & Pepper to taste.
As the liquid in the skillet comes to a boil, reduce the heat to Medium and allow the majority of the liquid to cook off, being sure to stir occasionally. This should take about 10-15 minutes.
This recipe makes about enough Vegan Sloppy Joe mixture for about 6 Vegan Sloppy Joes.
We garnished our Vegan Sloppy Joes with chopped red onion and pickles.
Serve hot on your favorite bun, Enjoy!
